anthony canata

CURRENT PRACTICE.  Attorney Canata represents disabled employees seeking short and long term disability benefits through their employer sponsored disability policies.  The Federal ERISA law (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) governs most of these policies, which are typically insured by companies like UNUM, Liberty Insurance, Cigna, The Hartford, Sun Life and others.  Attorney Canata represents clients on applications, appeals from denials and litigation of final denials in federal district court and in appeals to the circuit courts.

EARLY CAREER.  Attorney Canata began his career in Boston in 1997 at the law firm of Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, LLP, where he practiced complex corporate litigation. He returned to Western Massachusetts in 2000 seeking a more balanced life and a practice more aligned with his personal beliefs.  For more than ten years he focused on representing indigent criminal defendants, handling well over a thousand cases and earning the respect of clients, colleagues, judges and court personnel. In 2010 he met and began to work with Attorney Low.  He and Attorney Low became partners in 2012 and moved the practice from Springfield to Northampton in 2013.

EDUCATION & BACKGROUND.  Attorney Canata attended Trinity College, a highly selective liberal arts college located in Hartford, Connecticut, as the first Class of 1963 Scholar recipient.  He majored in philosophy, studied at the College’s Rome campus and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Honors.  He is now the chair of the Class of 1963 Scholarship Committee.

He completed his education at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in Philadelphia.  The Ivy League School is consistently ranked as one of the top law schools in the country.
